Problem

Rock This needed the social-media feeling of music-backed posts, but mainstream catalog licensing is expensive, rights-heavy, and operationally hard for an early-stage solo-founder product.

Approach

I started by treating the licensing constraint as a product strategy problem, not a reason to remove music from the experience. Mainstream catalog rights were not a practical startup expense, so I drew on my family's history in music, my own production background, and emerging AI tools to define an original soundtrack direction Rock This could own and govern.

From there, I built Rock This Music as a catalog operating system rather than a folder of tracks. I developed the music, lyrics, artwork, genres, and compilation structure alongside administration tools for uploads, metadata, attribution, usage, synchronization, curation, and removal, giving the platform a controlled source of audio and the operations needed to manage it.

I then integrated that system into the Rock This creation loop. Users can discover and preview catalog tracks, scrub a waveform, choose a start point, and attach a 30-second soundtrack to a post, while track identity, artwork, attribution, and usage context travel with the content across creation and feed experiences.

I designed the administration layer with a larger creator platform in mind. The current experience keeps contribution controlled, but the same rights-aware upload, metadata, artwork, attribution, release, and catalog tools can be extended to rights-holding users over time, creating a credible path for artists to publish and distribute original audio through Rock This.
